  1. 1881-1942. French admiral and politician. He 
  2. entered the navy 1899, and was appointed 
  3. admiral and commander in chief 1939. He 
  4. commanded the French navy 1939-40, took part 
  5. in the evacuation of Dunkirk, and entered the 
  6. Petain cabinet as naval minister. In 1941 he 
  7. was appointed vice-premier, and became 
  8. strongly anti-British and pro-German, but in 
  9. 1942 he was dropped from the cabinet by Laval 
  10. and sent to N Africa, where he was 
  11. assassinated.
